Feeding your gardens in the fall

At Crosswater Landscape, we believe that feeding your plants throughout the year is important for thriving grass, plants, trees...
Fertilizing in the fall, specifically, is of importance to us because by doing so, we are preparing plants to thrive with rejuvenated, strengthened roots in the coming spring, creating stronger plants with more flowers.

Organic root feeding

We are pleased to offer deep root injection fertilization on our list of services.

Living in the Northeast means dealing with rapid temperature fluctuations, a high insect population, sometimes adverse coastal conditions due to wind and salt, and soils which vary greatly in composition. These stresses can wreak havoc on our plants, trees, and shrubs. In order to combat these sub-optimum and stress conditions, we decided to start at the root.

Deep root feeding is accomplished by injecting a combination of liquid fertilizers into the ground. The feeder, or "Fertijector", is set to an appropriate depth, anywhere between 6-8" below ground level, depending on the size of the plant, and fertilizer is injected in a circular pattern around the plant.

This procedure, done in dormant seasons, fall and spring, has the following benefits:
prepares plants for stress conditions and increases root mass & depth, improves cold tolerance and increases plants water absorption and retention, reduces plants' wilting potential and increases chlorophyll production and delays leaf senescence, increases salt tolerance and overall plant health and vigor to offset infection of certain diseases & parasitic nematodes, provides plants with the ability to recover quickly from these stresses if they are already in place.

Have you ever heard of MEDLAR?
Picture
STRANGE FRUIT; Mespilus germanica or Medlar is a member of the rose family, whose gorgeous winter ripened fruit tastes somewhat like cinnamon applesauce. The medlar tree, exhibiting beautiful, showy yellow leaves all winter long, turns a beautiful dark green with pinkish-white flowers from late April to mid-June, resembling a rose. Most unique, the fruit must be nearly rotten to be edible. Medlars are eaten fresh in the winter after bletting, a ripening process where you leave the fruit for 2-3 weeks to soften. Simply poke a hole in the bletted fruit, and suck out the ripened flesh, spitting out the soft seeds is one way to eat medlars. They can also be used in delicious jellies and jams.
